How to Photograph Strangers on the Street

Every single workshop I run, someone asks me the same question within the first hour: how do you approach strangers and ask to photograph them?

The honest answer is that there is no formula. But there are principles.

Principle 1: Eye contact first, camera second

Before you raise your camera, make eye contact. Smile. Acknowledge the person as a human being first. This single act changes everything. It signals respect. It opens a door.

Principle 2: Learn three words in the local language

In Kolkata, I always say namaskar or dada (elder brother). In Varanasi, a simple pranam goes a long way. In Ladakh, juley means hello, thank you, and goodbye all at once. Three words. That is enough to break the ice.

Principle 3: Show them the image

After you photograph someone, show them the image on your screen. Watch their face. Most people light up when they see themselves through your eyes. It creates a moment of connection that transcends language.

Principle 4: Accept rejection gracefully

Someone says no. You smile, nod, and move on. No negotiation. No persistence. The dignity of the person you are photographing is always more important than your photograph.

Principle 5: Be present, not just a photographer

The best street portraits come from genuine encounters, not from hunting for images. When you are truly present — curious, open, not hurrying — people sense it. And they open up.
